The Bookcase Dilemma

I posted a comment today on facebook about my husband completing the bookcase he was building for us in the living room and how I was about to set to work filling the shelves with my carefully colour co-ordinated books.  This seemed to spark quiet a debate.  It would see there are those of us who fill our shelves in the same way as me.  There are those who have to have  their books in alphabetical order by author or by book name and there are those of us who don’t really give a hoot !

and of course there are Kindle lovers ! bah!

Which kind are you ?

Here are my new shelves, how would you fill them ?

How about like this below

I’d love to know.  Be back soon with how my bookcase looks when its finished.

Do not put them in backwards to show the white pages – that idea was simply ridiculous. I like a few nick-nacks in among the books and the occasional stacked pile next to the uprights. Have fun filling your shelves!

I totally agree with you there. Imagine how long it would take to find a book ! xx

My bookcases are overstuffed and non-alphabetcial, they're not colour coded either, I like the haphazard look of them all jostling for space I suppose 🙂 I'd absolutely love a floor to ceiling unit like the one in the picture with the ladder, dreamy!Your new shelves are lovely! Is that a fold-down bureau unit below the shelves? Whichever way you choose to organise I am sure they will look pretty fantastic, books make a house feel like home! :-)Jem xXxP.S I've a feeling you may want to enter my giveaway, it's definitely your sort of thing!

I agree, books do make a house feel like a home. I can't wait to get all mine put in their home. Its been a long time I have waited for this bookcase to be built. The "bureau below was built by my hubby too and houses two computers ! : ) Will take a look at your giveaway xx

My books are arranged by size, but I must admit the colour co-ordination looks good. Also I put books by the same author together.

I'm a lover of by size and colour, its proving a bit difficult at the moment to sort them. Especially as my husband wants to include HIS books !

I love the arrangement by colours! I've just had a huge book clearout (get down to Force!) but what's left is arranged by size and type – but they might have to be rearranged when I see how you do yours, as I'm sure they are going to look amazing!

My bookcase used to be ordered in what subject they are..but now they are out of order and being wrecked by my daughter. I love the sort by colour order!

Yes Kelly, life before children, so organised : ) My books are out of reach of the twins. They did though ask if they could put their Starwars books on the bookcase xx

I want the stairs one. It's gorgeous. I have so many books piled everywhere in the house. I am only allowed one book case & it's doubled up on each shelf. x

The stairs one is a great space saving idea isn't it Susan as well as looking great. We thought about making drawers in each of our stairs for storage ! xx

Back to front books is just barking – but I like the others! I do like the rainbow look, but then you can end up with series and authors separated, which is almost as annoying. Rainbow shelf for non fiction could be good though. I am in desperate need of more storage and would kill for a library. That said, I do love my kindle too. So helpful when on hols or a long train journey, and it means you don't have to have crappy embarrassing paperbacks on display (husband's sword and sandals sagas take up loads of room. There are a million novels about Romans apparently). I'd really love a room full of Folio editions…swoon.***To those I follow and who follow me – is my blog appearing on your dashboard? I want them all! But especially the shelves that spell out READ and the floor to ceiling ones with a long ladder and what looks like a great reading space below.

Your shelves look amazing.I never give a second thought to how I put books on a shelf. But then i don't need to. OH's OCD soon kicks in and he re-arranges them all for me!

The rainbow looks cool but I'd go insane looking for a book…I group mine by author, and they go onto whatever shelf space fits. With the deep built-in in the LR I've even stacked the paperbacks in the back and the harbacks in front. Love bookcases, my dream is to have a room floor to ceiling filled w/books & fabric, as I also love to quilt, now that should be sorted by color

I'd love your comment
